Hannover 1815-TW 5 thaler Fr-619
The first specimen was lot 29740 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $763.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hannover. George III gold 5 Taler 1815-TW AU58 NGC. Expressing only minimal traces of wear, this scarce type features moderately-handled surfaces along with a soft, central strike which is typical for the issue. An ideal representative from this fleeting-three year series, highly pleasing as such." The second specimen was lot 1523 in Jean Elsen sale 127 (Brussels, December 2015), where it sold for €850 (about US$1091 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, BRUNSWICK-CALENBERG-HANOVRE, Georg III, restauré (1813-1815), AV 5 Taler d'or, 1815TW, Londres. D/ Ecu couronné, entouré de la Jarretière. R/ Valeur et date dans le champ. Petits coups. presque Superbe. (Germany, kingdom of Hannover, George III restored (1813-20), gold five thaler of 1815, London mint. Obverse: crowned arms, Order of the Garter around; reverse: value and date in field. Small nicks, about extremely fine.)"
This type was issued 1813-15 and is the first of the denomination after the kingdom was restored. Elector George III was also king George III of England. The kingdom of Hannover was the old duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg prior to the Napoleonic invasions. It was separated from the British crown in 1837 and absorbed by Prussia in 1866.
