Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74580

This specimen was lot 74580 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1788-C. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg III (George III of England). PCGS AU-53. Mild, even wear to the devices, with some luster remaining in the fields. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1785-89 along with KM 341, which had a shield obverse/value reverse. When this denomination was introduced, it was worth two-thirds thaler but by the reign of George III, it had slipped to one half thaler.
