Hannover 1787-C 1/6 thaler
This specimen was lot 74592 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 6 Mariengroschen (1/6 Taler), 1787-C. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg III (George III of Great Britain). PCGS AU-53. This example offers old dove-gray cabinet toning with delightful subtle hints of gold, russet and cobalt in reflected light. Attractive. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1785-91 along with KM 389, which had a bust obverse. When this denomination was introduced, it was worth one sixth thaler but by the reign of George III, it had slipped to one-ninth thaler.
