Künker sale 335, lot 3922

This specimen was lot 3922 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €45 (about US$59 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

(Germany, city of Hamburg, 32 schilling of 1809, struck during French occupation of 1813-14 from silver taken from the Hamburg Bank. Obverse: helmeted arms, mintmaster's initials below; reverse: denomination and date. Handsome patina, light adjustment marks, about extremely fine.)"

This coin was struck while the port was under French occupation. The issue of 1808 (Dav-657) was just large enough to be included in Davenport but the issues of 1809 are too light. Hamburg would not issue large silver coins again until after unification in 1871.

Recorded mintage: 879,585.

Specification: 14.17 g, 0.868 fine silver, this specimen 14,16 g.
