Hamburg 1808 2 ducats Fr-1139
This specimen was lot 3706 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,842 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"STADT 2 Dukaten 1808. GOLD. R Nur 1.250 Exemplare geprägt. Sehr attraktives Exemplar, vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Hamburg, double ducat of 1808. Scarce, only 1,250 struck, very attractive extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1808-10 during the Napoleonic domination and is the last double ducat from this locale. Hamburg did not give up minting ducats until 1872 amid the coinage reform resulting from unification.
