Stephen Album sale 32, lot 1162
Hamburg SA32-1162r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 3663 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $370.13. The catalog description[1] noted,

"GERMANY. Hamburg. 32 Schilling (2 Mark), 1809-CAIG. NGC MS-64. Issued in 1815 by the French occupational forces serving under Marshall Davoux. Appealing multicolored toning with blue being prominent. Very sharp and crisp details. From the Rockaway Collection."

The second specimen was lot 1162 in Stephen Album sale 32 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted, "HAMBURG: Free and Hanseatic City, AR 32 schilling, 1809, KM-537, J-39, mintmaster CAIG, a lovely lightly golden toned example! NGC graded MS64. Issued by French occupation forces under Marshal Louis-Nicolas Davout, 'The Iron Marshal.' During Davout's defense of Hamburg, one type of silver coin was issued. The design of the 32 schilling coin of 1809 was reused, and the date was not changed, but the mintmaster's initials were changed from HSK (for Hans Schierven Knoph) to CAIG (for C. A. J. Ginquembre, who was the then French director of the mint). The coins were struck in 1813." This coin is too small and too light to be included in Davenport altho it has the same amount of silver as the 32 schilling of 1808 (KM 530) which is included therein.

Recorded mintage: 3,058,000.

Specification: 14.17 g, .968 fine silver, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: KM-537.
