This specimen was lot 652 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,410. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hesse-Darmstadt. Taler, 1809-L. NGC MS-64. Finest certified. Lightly toned with reflective surfaces. Lustrous and very attractive. From the Rockaway Collection." This one year type, the only thaler issued between 1800 and 1819, is scarce, verging on rare. This is the last convention thaler from this state.
