Sedwick Treasure Auction 38, lot 431
Sedwick 38-0431r.jpg

This specimen was lot 431 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $870. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA, Guatemala City, pillar ½ real, Ferdinand VI, 1760, rare. VF details despite light surface corrosion and very minor edge-loss, rated R2 in Yonaka. Recovered from El Cazador, sunk in 1784 in the Gulf of Mexico." Collectors would normally spurn a corroded example such as this but Guatemalan pillar half reales are too rare for one to be choosy. This type was struck 1754-60 and is much rarer than the SCWC indicates. Half reales were also struck in the name of Charles III in 1760. The four and eight reales from this mint are more common than the smaller denominations.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 1.04 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-10245, Yonaka-G05.60; KM-15; Cal-37.
