Stack's Bowers October 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74511
SB1025-74511r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74511 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. 1/2 Real, 1760-G. Guatemala Mint. Charles III. NGC VF-25. First year of issue for this monarch. According to Brad Yonaka, he only recorded three examples of this date for this king. Purchased privately from Kunker." After two decades of minting crude coblike coins, the Guatemala mint finally received in 1754 sufficient equipment to allow workers to cut round blanket and apply edge devices. Pillar half reales were struck for Ferdinand VI 1754-60 and for Charles III 1760-71. Due to the locals' habit of drilling holes in their coins, collectible examples are today very few. This example realized eleven times the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.917 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-11026, KM-23; Cal-37; Yonaka-G05-60a.
