This specimen was lot 3463 in Goldberg sale 84 (Los Angeles, January 2015), where it sold for $705. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. 50 Pounds, 2011. Britannia seated with rippling Union Jack behind. One year type. PCGS graded Proof 69 Deep Cameo (First Strike)." In 1987, emulating the krugerrand, the maple leaf, the American gold eagle and other bullion coins, the Royal Mint introduced the Britannia program. Gold one, half, quarter and tenth ounce pieces were coined and marketed. To boost sales, the reverses were changed annually.
