Great Britain 1957 3 pence KM-901
This specimen was part of lot 43180 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), which sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Pence to 4 Pence Maundy Set (4 Pieces), 1957. All CHOICE UNCIRCULATED. Lustrous and darkly toned with specks of charcoal color, a well matched set." Since medieval times, the monarch or her representative has handed out Maundy sets to the poor on Maundy Thursday. When the tradition began, silver pennies, tuppence, threepence and groats were circulating coins but are now long since obsolete. In the fifties, threepence were also struck in nickel-brass for circulation (KM 900).
