This specimen was lot 23090 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 3 Pence, 1957. NGC PROOF-65. Struck in brass. A common coin that is RARE in proof. Deep bronze toning with hues of blue and purple. Clearly an example which sat for a prolonged period of time undisturbed." This type of 1954-70, was the last threepence issued prior to decimalization. It had no place in the decimal system, being worth 1¼ new pence, and was demonetized. The crowned portcullis (castle gate) featured on the reverse is one of the royal badges.
