Great Britain 1904 penny KM-795
This specimen was lot 32458 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Maundy Penny, 1904. London Mint. Edward VII. PCGS PROOFLIKE-67. This charming and pleasing Maundy Pence delivers good eye appeal, with stunning luster and sharp glowing details throughout." Maundy sets comprised silver one, two, three and fourpence presented to the poor on Maundy Thursday. When the ceremony started in the reign of Charles II, the coins represented real cash and were doubtless spent by their grateful recipients. By Edwardian times, Maundy coinage was another ossified tradition and the coins went straight to collectors. This type was struck 1902-10 and is not rare.
Recorded mintage: 19,000.
Specification: 0.47 g, 0.925 fine silver, 11 mm diameter.
