Great Britain 1888 half penny

This specimen was lot 2127 in Goldberg sale 112 (Los Angeles, September 2019), where it sold for $102. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Halfpenny, 1888. Victoria. Nicely detailed mint state example. NGC graded MS-65 Brown." In 1860, the copper half penny was superseded by a smaller bronze half penny. To mark the change, the young bust was dropped in favor of the "bun head." This type was struck until 1895. The farthings and pennies were similarly modified. This specimen realzied one-third of the catalog value.
