Great Britain 1860 farthing
This specimen was lot 13201 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Farthing, 1860. NGC MS-64 RD. Mule: toothed border on the obverse and beaded border on the reverse. Nice luster. Tied with two other coins for highest certified by NGC or PCGS." In 1860, the copper farthing was superseded by a smaller bronze farthing. To mark the change, the young bust was dropped in favor of the "bun head." Farthings of this date exist with beaded and toothed borders with a few (such as this one) muling the two. This type was struck until 1895. Half pennies and pennies were similarly modified.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.86 g, bronze.
