Great Britain 1860/59 penny
This specimen was lot 3230 in Goldberg sale 78 (Los Angeles, January 2014), where it sold for $5,875. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Penny, 1860/59. Victoria. One of the Great Rarities of the copper penny series (catalog value in Spink in Extremely Fine 3750£ approximately $6000 and Uncirculated 6000£ approximately $9600). Extremely Rare. NGC graded MS-61 Brown." This penny was struck 1841-60 and is common, tho this date is rare. It shares the same design with the farthing and half penny. Most of the production for 1860 was of the bun head type (KM 749), minted 1860-94.
