This specimen was lot 25052 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it sold for $3,525. The catalog description[1] noted, "Victoria Proof Penny 1860, PR65 Brown PCGS. A gorgeous Gem, infrequently encounter[ed] in the proof format, with full reflectivity in the fields and a stunning mixture of purple and blue iridescence in the fields. Extremely rare this nice and easily a candidate for finest known." This "bun head" penny was struck 1860-74 in large numbers and worn specimens fill dealer junk boxes. Numerous varieties exist.

Recorded mintage: 5,053,000 plus 32,000 of the young head type.

Specification: 9.4 g, bronze, 31 mm diameter.
