This specimen was lot 1058 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $2,232.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, 1878. PCGS PROOF-64 RB. Obverse 8, reverse J. Lightly toned with only a few dark specks. In an old green holder. From the Kevin Tierney Collection." This is a slightly better date. This penny was struck 1860-94 in several varieties and is common, tho the proofs are rare. Worn specimens fill dealer junk boxes. Numerous varieties exist.
