This specimen was lot 23996 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description^[1] noted, "George II Proof Shilling 1746, Old Bust, PR62 NGC, a bit dull looking due to its deep golden gray patina but this seems harshly graded as the surfaces are reflective and there are no apparent defects. Rare: one of 100 struck for the proof set of this year." This type is listed for 1746-51 and 1758 and is fairly common in worn condition. The mint did not produce near enough small change for the industrial boom of the eighteenth century, leading to a proliferation of private tokens. The situation would not be rectified until the reform of 1817.
