SB1020-71643r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71643 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, 1746. London Mint. George II. PCGS MS-67. Maundy type. Ideally struck with scintillating blue, green and gold toning highlights around the legends. Certainly elite quality for the issue, and tied with three others for the finest seen by PCGS." This type was struck 1729-60 and, tho not rare, is difficult to find in nice condition. It is difficult to appreciate that prior to 1797, all English pennies were struck in silver, a holdover from medieval issues.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.50 g, 0.925 fine silver, .014 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: S-3715A; KM-567.
