Great Britain 1707 half crown
This specimen was lot 21305 in Heritage sale 3004 (New York, January 2009), where it sold for $3,005 as a "post auction buy". The catalog description[1] noted, "Queen Anne silver Halfcrown 1707, SEPTIMO edge date, After Union type, AU55 NGC, an exceptional example having 'hard' or semi-prooflike luster, sharply struck and well balanced, and silvery surfaces with hints of golden blue iridescence. Some faint obverse adjustments as almost always seen on large silver of this period. This wonderful specimen is as close to real UNC or Mint State as these come, and this piece is about as sharply struck as the Spink plate coin, which presumably is about as fine as may be found. Rare in this grade! The cataloguer can recall seeing only one other piece this nice, which sold about 20 years ago for over our top estimate." This type was struck at the London and Edinburgh mints 1707-13 and is very scarce in nice condition. The white tabs in the photo are from NGC's new "edge viewable" holder.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 15.05 g, .925 silver, .447 troy oz ASW.
