Great Britain 1700 1/2 penny

Heritage sale 3040, lot 32381

This specimen was lot 32381 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $152.75. The catalog description^[1] noted, "William III 1/2 Penny 1700 VF. Third issue. Unbarred A's in Britannia. With glossy, chestnut-brown color. Moments of green color cling to the obverse legends and some haymarking is noted." Tin halfpence were attempted under James II 1685-87 and again under William III 1689-92. Tin farthings were a similar failure. Subsequent issues such as this one from 1699-1701, were copper, a much more stable metal.
