Great Britain (1628-29) unite Fr-246
This specimen was lot 34741 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $3,960. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Charles I gold Unite ND (1628-1629) XF45 NGC, Tower mint (under Charles I), Anchor mm. (anchor) • CAROLVS: D' : G' : MAG' : BR' : FR' : ET' : HIB' : REX :, crowned, mantled bust of Charles left, XX (denomination) behind / (anchor) FLORENT CONCORDIA • REGNA •, crowned Stuart arms. A choice, moderately handled representative of a highly popular type featuring light but dramatic die-shift to the obverse legend and denomination, coupled with sublime honeyed-gold surfaces, lending to appreciable eye appeal. From the Long Island Collection." This gold unite (twenty shillings) was accompanied by a gold angel (Fr-245), double crown (Fr-247) and gold crown (Fr-248). Charles' conflicts with Parliament and his subsequent inability to raise funds cramped the production of gold.
