Great Britain (1603-04) crown Dav-3758
This specimen was lot 31187 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Crown, ND (1603-04). London Mint; mm: thistle. James I. PCGS Genuine--Graffiti, AU Details. First coinage. Obverse: James, holding sword and reins, riding caparisoned horse trotting right; Reverse: Garnished square-topped coat-of-arms. Quite charming and pleasing, this Crown would serve as an excellent representative of the type, as the level of handling is low and the toning is impressive, with the only distraction coming in the form of some scratches on the obverse behind the equine-mounted monarch. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection." This, the first silver crown of the new ruler, differs from later issues in the reverse legend. This one has a reverse legend "·EXERGAT·DEVS·DISSIPENTVR·INIMICI·", while later issues (Dav-3759) state, "QVAE DEVS CONIVNXIT NEMO SEPARET". A gold crown (KM 18) also exists.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 30.10 g, 0.925 fine silver.
