England (160)1 pound Fr-219
This specimen was lot 31176 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $45,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Late Elizabethan Issue on the Cusp of Mint State Status, GREAT BRITAIN. Pound, (160)1. London Mint; mm: 1. Elizabeth I. PCGS AU-53. Seventh issue. Obverse: Crowned and mantled bust left, wearing ruffled collar; Reverse: Garnished square-topped coat-of-arms; crown above. Handling itself rather commendably, this impressive, wide flan Elizabethan issue provides a rich endowment of detail from the strike, particularly upon the reverse. Supremely charming golden luster commands attention and is most forcefully visible near the peripheries and within the finely engraved elements. Some combination of strike softness and light circulation is observed on the likeness of Elizabeth, though the outline of the Gloriana is never lost, merely faded. This limited setback is rather marginal when considering the enormous popularity of the type, matching the general popularity of Elizabeth herself. For the collector seeking an advanced issue of the Elizabethan era, this Pound will undoubtedly satisfy. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection." This sixth issue gold coin was accompanied by an angel (six shillings eight pence), a half pound (ten shillings), a gold crown (five shillings) and gold half crown (2½ shillings). It is also known dated with a "2".
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 11.15 g, 0.979 fine gold, this specimen 11.04 g.
