Sincona sale 75, lot 80

This specimen was lot 80 in Sincona sale 75 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 5,000 CHF (about US$6,069 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Grossbritannien | Königreich. James I. 1603-1625. Gold 1/2 crown n. d. (1603-1604), Tower Mint. First coinage. Mintmark thistle. Selten. NGC UNC Details. Leicht gereinigt. (Rare, Very lightly cleaned.)" This half crown, or 2½ shillings, was the smallest gold coin issued during the reign of king James. This is the last issue thereof, being superseded thereafter by a silver coin.
