One peseta and 50 centimos at top, ten and five centimos at bottom

These specimens were lot 1739 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), which it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,949 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ESPAGNE, Guerre civile (1936-1939), lot de 5 p. de nécessité républicaines: Gratallops, 1 peseta, 50 centimos, 25 centimos, 10 centimos, 5 centimos, s.d. (1937). Série complète en zinc. Très rare. Très Beau. (Spain, Civil War, 1936-39, lot of five undated necessity pieces struck by the republicans at Gratallops: one peseta, fifty centimos, 25 centimos, ten centimos, five centimos. Complete series in zinc, very rare, Very Fine.)"

Gratallops is a village in the south of Catalonia, population 226. Numista says these were struck in iron but we agree with the auctioneers that they were struck in zinc. They are likely very rare.

Specification: 1.9-3.1 g, zinc.
