Stack's Bowers May 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 32360

This specimen was lot 32360 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. West Germany. 50 Pfennig, 1969-J. Hamburg Mint. PCGS PROOF-67 Cameo. Featuring an alluring cameo nature, this Superb Gem proof issue delivers great eye appeal." This type was produced at four mints (Munich, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Hamburg) in 1950 in such numbers that no more were struck until 1966. The Hamburg mint mark was "J". The last issue for circulation was in 1995 and the type was retired in 2002 with the coming of the euro. The design was revised in 1972 to change the edge from reeded to plain.

Recorded mintage: 14,969,000 plus 5,000 proofs.
