West Germany 1966-G 2 mark
This specimen was part of lot 27235 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), which sold for $317.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Federal Republic Two Proof Sets 1950-1965-G & 1966-G, Each set contains eight coins, Pfennig to 5 Mark. All coins are choice. The 1950/1965 set is an unusual mixture of these two dates as issued by the government." Unlike the smaller denominations, which had no design change from their introduction in 1950 to their retirement in 2002, the two mark was used to commemorate various German dignitaries. This type honoring physicist Max Planck was struck 1957-71. Others honored Konrad Adenauer (KM 124, 1969-87), Theodor Heuss (1970-87), Kurt Schumacher (1979-93), Ludwig Erhard (1988-2000) and Franz Joseph Strauss (1990-2000). The Karlsruhe mint mark was "G".
Recorded mintage: 3,895,000 plus 3,070 proofs.
Specification: 7 g, copper-nickel, 26.75 mm diameter, lettered edge.
