Steve Album Auction 53, lot 3061

This specimen was lot 3061 in Steve Album Auction 53 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY: Third Reich, 50 reichspfennig, 1938-J, a superb reflective proof example! PCGS graded Proof 65 CAM, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." This type was struck 1938-39 at seven mints (A, B, D, E, F, G, J). This type is rather scarce, considering the substantial mintage, suggesting that it was likely melted to release nickel for the Nazi war machine. The denomination was converted to aluminum during 1939 (KM 96).

Recorded mintage: 730,430 plus 1,333,349 of KM 49 (Weimar type). This is a scarce date.

Specification: 3.5 g, nickel, 20 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-95, J-365.
