This specimen was lot 46243 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $65. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Third Reich. Reichspfennig, 1938-D. Munich Mint. PCGS MS-65 Red Brown." This specimen is a common date of a series struck 1936-40 during the early years of the Nazi regime in Germany. The "D" mintmark is for the Munich mint. For a race of Aryan supermen, the Nazis were remarkably unimaginative coin designers and this type is quite dull. It was replaced by an even more boring zinc issue (KM 97) 1940-45.
Recorded mintage: 13,930,000.
Specification: 2.01 g, bronze, 17.4 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-89; J-361.
