Sincona sale 9, lot 4133

This specimen was lot 4133 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it sold for 375 CHF (about US$474 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Weimarer Republik 5 Reichsmark 1925, Berlin. 1000-Jahrfeier der Rheinlande. Polierte Platte. FDC. (Weimar Republic, five reichsmark of 1925, Berlin mint, on the millennium of the Rhineland, proof.)"

This type was the first five mark struck by the Weimar Republic, which would use this denomination to issue numerous commemoratives until 1932. The Rhineland, then under French occupation, was a sensitive topic among patriotic Germans.

Recorded mintage: 684,000 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 25 g, 0.500 fine silver, 37 mm diameter.
