Künker sale 439, lot 2548

This specimen was lot 2548 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €340 (about US$468 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"REICHSKLEINMÜNZEN, 20 Pfennig 1890 D. Prachtexemplar. Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung Jürgen und Erika Schmidt, Bovenden. Erworben am 3. Februar 2020 von Dr. Hansen, Fulda. (empire small change, twenty pfennig, cabinet example, uncirculated.)"

This coin is a copper-nickel twenty pfennig from a type issued 1890-92 from six mints, including the Berlin ("A"), Munich ("D"), Muldenhutten ("E"), Stuttgart ("F"), Karlsruhe ("G") and Hamburg (mintmark "J") mints. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design.

Recorded mintage: 703, 093, including an 1890/89 overdate.

Specification: 6.25 g, copper-nickel, 23 mm diameter.
