Sincona sale 33, lot 2853

This specimen was lot 2853 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$2,612 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIA | Genova. Dogi Biennali, 1528-1797 48 Lire 1794. Spl. (republic of Genoa, biennial doges, 1568-1797, 48 lire of 1794, extremely fine.)"

This type of 1793-97 is accompanied by a gold 96 lire (KM 251) which the SCWC notes as being rather more available. Genoa was occupied by Napoleon in 1798 and made into the puppet Ligurian Republic. Genoa never recovered its independence; in 1815 it was annexed by the kingdom of Sardinia and is now part of Italy.
