from Sincona sale 11, lot 1766

This specimen was lot 1766 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN Genua Dogi Biennali, 1528-1797. 8 Lire 1792. Schrötlingsfehler. Vorzüglich. (Genoa, biennial doges, 1528-1797, eight lire of 1792, extremely fine.)"

This type, struck 1793-97, is accompanied by a gold 48 (KM A245) and 96 lire (KM 251) which the SCWC notes as being rather more available. Genoa was occupied by Napoleon in 1798 and made into the puppet Ligurian Republic. Genoa never recovered its independence; in 1815 it was annexed by the kingdom of Sardinia and is now part of Italy.
