This specimen was lot 2628 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $1,955. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Liguria. Ligurian Republic. 4 Lire, Year 2 (1799). RARE in high grade. Sharply struck. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." Genoa was occupied by Napoleon in 1798 and made into the puppet Ligurian Republic. Genoa never recovered its independence; in 1815 it was annexed by the kingdom of Sardinia and is now part of Italy. Most of the issues of the Ligurian Republic are rare to very rare.
