Sincona sale 46, lot 561

This specimen was lot 561 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY, Genova, Dogi Biennali, 1528-1797. 1/2 Doppia 1629. Gutes sehr schön. Unregelmässiger Schrötling. (republic of Genoa, biennial doges, 1528-1797, half doppia of 1629. Good very fine, Irregular flan.)"

The doppia was originally a double scudo d'oro so having a half doppia wouldn't seem to make much sense but there it is. Friedberg lists this type for 1557-1638 and, tho scarce, is the most available Genoese gold coin of the period. One-eighth thru five doppia are also recorded.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: gold, this specimen 3.38 g.

Catalog reference: MIR 209 (unlisted date), Fr-420.
