Genoa about 1700

This specimen was lot 30359 in Heritage auction 3096 (Dallas, TX, March 2021), where it sold for $9,600. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Italy: Genoa. Republic 2 Scudi 1627 XF45 NGC . Visually rich owing to a soft cabinet tone of silty russet and silver color, which evenly blankets the surfaces. Inspection unveils glints of mint luster underneath, taking on a distinctive glossy appearance by virtue of the overlying patina. Truly unique in its visual appeal, and as delightful as any circulated specimen could be, owing to the unique combination of tone, brilliance, and complexion. Very scarce, and the first representative of this fleeting issue that we have offered to date. From the Paramount Collection."

This type was struck 1627-37. For 1627, the SCWC also notes KM 25 (scudo stretto), KM 26 (mezzo scudo stretto), KM 29 (quarto scudo stretto), KM 54 (ochavo scudo stretto) and various billon coins.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, 76 g, this specimen 77.26 g.

Catalog reference: KM 59, Dav-LS547, MIR-215/8.
