This specimen was lot 32827 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold Proof 'Visit of the French President' 5000 Francs 1971 PR66 NGC. A gem of perfection, featuring fully reflective surfaces and bright yellow color." Like the coinage of many impoverished African countries, the commemoratives such as this one, which were sold outside the country, are easier to obtain than circulating coinage. This specimen has a serial number stamped into the reverse.
