Frankfurt 1861 gulden

from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71146

This specimen was lot 71146 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $216. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Frankfurt. Gulden, 1861. Free City. NGC MS-65. Incredibly appealing and alluring, this resounding Gem minor features mostly argent central fields, while the peripheries have taken on a pleasing golden-iridescent tone." This denomination, slightly larger than a French two francs, was struck in Frankfurt 1838-63. This type is was also struck in 1859.
