Frankfurt 1840 gulden

Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74528

This specimen was lot 74528 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $168. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Frankfurt. Gulden, 1840. Free City. PCGS MS-63. A remarkably struck Gulden with almost prooflike fields and rich sunset toning on both sides. From the Richard Margolis Collection." This type was struck 1838-41 and is not common although this example realized one-sixth of the catalog value. Frankfurt was annexed to Prussia in 1866 and her coinage ended.
