Künker sale 400, lot 123

This specimen was lot 123 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,135 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKFURT, STADT, Reichstaler 1716. Schießprämie, ausgegeben während des Stückschießens anläßlich des Geburtstages von Leopold I. Der gekrönte Frankfurter Adler, den Kopf nach l. gewandt//11 Zeilen Schrift, oben Rosetten, unten zwei gekreuzte Palmzweige. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 63 (6062339-005). Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Fast Stempelglanz. (Germany, city of Frankfurt, thaler of 1716, prize issued during the shooting festival on the occasion of the birthday of Leopold I. The crowned Frankfurt eagle, head left; reverse: 11 line inscription, rosettes at the top, two crossed palm branches at the bottom. Graded NGC MS63, very scarce, especially in this quality, choice example, about uncirculated.)"

This rare issue is one of the few thalers struck by the city in the first half of the eighteenth century.
