Jean Elsen sale 151, lot 1614

This specimen was lot 1614 in Jean Elsen sale 151 (Brussels, June 2022), where it sold for €750 (about US$937 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Cinquième République (1959-), AV 100 francs en or, 1993. Bicentenaire du Musée du Louvre. Le Sacre de Napoléon. Ecrin. Titre 0,920. Flan poli. (France, Fifth Republic, since 1959, gold one hundred francs, bicentennial of the Louvre Museum, the coronation of Napoleon. With box, Proof.)"

Starting in the 1980's, the Paris mint issued so many NCLT's that the standard catalogs had to drop them to keep the books a manageable size. This series of NCLT's honoring the Louvre included KM 1017 (Mona Lisa), 1018 (Liberty guiding the People), 1019 (the Nike of Samothrace), 1020 (the Venus de Milo), 1021 (the infanta Marie Marguerite) and KM 1022 (shown here). The designs were also issued in a one ounce format with a nominal value of 500 francs.

Recorded mintage: 20,000 in silver, 5,000 in gold.

Specification: KM 1022: 22.26 g, 0.900 fine silver; KM 1022a: 17 g, 0.920 fine gold; this specimen 17,00 g.

Catalog reference: KM 1022 (silver), KM 1022a (gold), Gad-C53.
