Jean Elsen sale 151, lot 1613

The specimen shown is a circulating commemorative honoring the centennial of the Eiffel Tower. Collector versions were sold in silver, gold and platinum. The regular nickel Semeuse five francs was also struck in 1989 but sold only to collectors. The second specimen was lot 1613 in Jean Elsen sale 151 (Brussels, June 2022), where it sold for €575 (about US$718 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Cinquième République (1959-), AV 5 francs en or, 1989. Centenaire de la Tour Eiffel. Ecrin et certificat. Flan poli. (France, Fifth Republic, since 1959, gold five francs, centennial of the Eiffel Tower. With box and certificate, Proof.)"

Recorded mintage: 9,784,011, plus 1,850 essais plus 80,000 in silver, 30,000 in gold, 3,000 in platinum plus 94,449 of the Semeuse type.

Specification: KM 968: 10 g, 29 mm diameter, nickel; KM 968a: 12 g, 0.900 fine silver; KM 968b: 14 g, 0.925 fine gold; KM 968c: 16 g, 0.999 fine platinum; the second specimen 14,00 g.
