Jean Elsen sale 165, lot 1411

This specimen was lot 1411 in Jean Elsen sale 165 (Brussels, June 2026), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Louis-Philippe (1830-1848), AR 5 francs, 1831 BB, Strasbourg. Tête laurée. Tranche en creux. Nettoyé. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis Philippe, 1830-48, silver five francs of 1831, Strasbourg mint, laureate head, incuse letters on edge, cleaned, Very Fine.)"

In addition to the Domard bust shown here, the Strasbourg mint also struck five francs with the Tiolier bust (KM 735.3) and Domard bust five francs with raised edge lettering (KM 745.3). In 1832, the reverse was modified to move the privy mark and mintmark below the wreath. This coin was legal tender in the United States until 1857 at a value of 93 cents.

Recorded mintage: 982,614 (all types).

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, lettered edge, engraved by Joseph-François Domard.
