France 1793-MA 2 sols KM-603.11
This specimen was part of lot 71304 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), which sold for $129. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Constitution. Sextet of 2 Sols (6 Pieces), Years 4/1792 & 5/1793. Louis XVI. Grade Range: FINE Details to EXTREMELY FINE Details. 1) Year 4/1792-I, Clement-Ferrand. 24.49 g. EXTREMELY FINE. Punctured, Countermarked. 2) Year 4/1792-T, Saumur. 21.56 g. EXTREMELY FINE. Environmental Damage. 3) Year 5/1793-MA, Marseille. FINE. Tooled. 4) Year 5/1793-MA, Marseille. 24.82 g. VERY GOOD. Silvered, Cleaned. 5) Year 5/1793-T, Nantes. EXTREMELY FINE. Cleaned. 6) year 5/1793. Pau. 22.55 g. VERY FINE. Scratch. SOLD AS IS/NO RETURNS. From the Richard Margolis Collection." This double sol constitutionnel was struck 1791-93 at many mints, of which Marseille is a better date. The Marseille mint struck an additional quantity of Gad-31, the double sol aux balances, in 1793. Both types usually come crudely struck with the double sol aux balances especially bad. Numista notes a rare error with the reverse legend "NATOIN" instead of "NATION".
The provisional mints of the Revolution.[2] Responding to an acute coin shortage caused by the collapse of the assignats, the National Assembly late in 1791 authorized the establishment of temporary mints to supplement the output of base metal coinage by the regular mints. These provisional mints were to be close to existing mints and supervised by mint personnel. These requirements were ignored. The following mints are known to have produced three, six and twelve denier pieces and two sols: Convent des Barnabites (in Paris, but outside the Mint), mintmark "A" with a dot; Arras, mintmark "W" with a dot; Besançon, mintmark "BB"; Clermont-Ferrand, mintmark "I" with a dot; Dijon, mintmark "D" with a dot; Metz (adjacent to the regular mint), mintmark "AA" with a dot; Roanne, mintmark "D"; and Saumur, mintmark "T" with a dot. Most of these mints were closed by the end of 1792 tho some may have operated into 1793.
Recorded mintage: 400,000.
Specification: 24.47 g, copper or brass, 32-36 mm diameter. This specimen is 24.82 g.
