Künker sale 264, lot 3092

This specimen was lot 3092 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,100 (about US$2,713 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖNIGREICH Louis XVI, 1774-1793. Louis d'or au buste habillé 1775, A, Paris. GOLD. RR Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1774-93, gold louis of the uniformed bust of 1775, Paris mint. Rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The louis of Louis XVI continued to be struck to the standard of 1726 but the price of gold had risen, making the type uneconomical to issue. In 1785, Calonne lowered the weight to 7.65 grams and recoined all the stocks in government hands, rendering this earlier type very rare.

Recorded mintage: 220,565.

Specification: 8.15 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 24 mm diameter, this specimen 8.05 g.

Catalog reference: Duplessy 1704; Fr-471; Gadoury 359, Dr/4 № 879, Dr/2 № 602.
