Steve Album sale 55, lot 822

This specimen was lot 822 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE: Louis XVI, 1774-1790, AR 1/10 écu (12 sols), Bayonne, 1775-L, toned, obverse adjustm[e]nt marks, very rare date/mintmark, PCGS graded MS62." This coin, called a cinquième d'écu au bandeau, was the French equivalent of a dime. This type was struck 1775-90 from numerous mints in the final years of the ancien régime. This is a rare date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: silver, 11 deniers (.917 fine), 83 pieces to the mark (2.94 g), face value 24 sols, 21-22 mm diameter. Engraved by Benjamin Duvivier.
