This coin, called a cinquième d'écu au bandeau, was the French equivalent of a twenty cent piece. In the coinage system of the ancien régime, the 1/5 écu = 24 sols. This type was struck 1775-90 from numerous mints in the final years of the ancien régime. This is a product of the Aix mint, which closed in 1786.

Recorded mintage: 23,679, rather scarce[1].

Specification: silver, 11 deniers (.917 fine), 41.5 pieces to the mark (5.83 g), face value 24 sols, 26-27 mm diameter, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.
