Steve Album sale 55, lot 823

This specimen was lot 823 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE: Louis XVI, 1774-1790, AR 1/5 écu (24 sols), Bayonne, 1775-L, toned, rare date/mintmark, PCGS graded AU58." This coin, called a cinquième d'écu au bandeau, was the French equivalent of a twenty cent piece. This type was struck 1775-90 from numerous mints in the final years of the ancien régime. This is a fairly common date.

Recorded mintage: 16,976.

Specifications: silver, 11 deniers (.917 fine), 41.5 pieces to the mark (5.83 g), face value 24 sols, 26-27 mm diameter. Engraved by Benjamin Duvivier.
